Musical Angel, ca 1520, Rosso Fiorentino. Italian Baroque Era Painter (1494 - 1540)
(via mzteeeyed)
The sophisticated style of Pompeo Batoni is characterized by baroque exuberance while anticipating the cool restraint of neoclassicism. Time, brawny and heroic with hourglass in hand, pitilessly orders the annihilation of youthful Beauty at the extremely eager hands of Old Age. In contrast to the scene’s viciousness, Batoni’s technique is one of great finesse and detail. The pearly surface of Beauty’s flesh, Time’s ultramarine robe and delicate feathers, and Old Age’s wilted skin are all are exceptionally handled. Additionally, his mastery of composition is displayed. The circular arrangement emphasizes the essential interdependence of the figures.
